Linda Cates Scholarship for Democratic Deliberation

History:
Linda Brooks Cates arrived on the Colorado State University campus in the fall of 1967, a 21 year old junior, married, with an 18 month old baby to support. The Communication Studies department, formerly Speech department, immediately became a source of intellectual stimulation and a family for Linda. Having to work to put herself through college, plus raise a child and worry about child care, Linda was a serious student who could only attend college part-time. She graduated with her bachelor's degree in 1970, and then became a graduate teaching assistant while earning her Master's degree with an emphasis in both rhetoric and radio and television in 1972. The Speech Department and its faculty nurtured Linda and helped her become a high school speech teacher. This endowment will help students and faculty accomplish goals in the Center for Public Deliberation within the Department of Communication Studies at Colorado State University.
