Ed A. Hewett Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1993, this scholarship honors the memory of Ed A. Hewett and is made possible by contributions from friends, faculty, staff, alumni and the Hewett family.
This scholarship honors the memory of a distinguished alumnus, Ed A. Hewett. In February, 1989, Ed was one of a select group that President Bush brought together to develop a strategy for dealing with the emerging crisis in the Soviet Union. In early 1991, Ed took a leave of absence from the Brookings Institution to become a Special Assistant to the president on National Security Affairs and Senior Director of Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council
In this position, Ed made a contribution to an important event in the Twentieth Century: the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In 1989, Ed was named Honor Alumnus and he and his wife, Nancy, (who is a Colorado State alumna) came to Fort Collins to accept his award, and Ed delivered the commencement address to the graduates of the College of Liberal Arts.
The establishment of this scholarship fund is a tribute to Ed. He was a great teacher, an outstanding scholar and someone who made a real difference in the world. It is hoped that the recipients of these scholarships will strive equally hard to make the world a better place. His contribution in the events surrounding the collapse of Communism goes well beyond what most individuals could hope to achieve.
