James J. Garvey Graduate English Language Scholarship


History:
Professor James (Jim) Garvey taught linguistics, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, history of English, humanities and literature at Colorado State University for 34 years. He was especially interested in first and second language teaching, usage issues, gender in language, literary stylistics and child language acquisitions. He is the author, with Gerald P. Delahunty, of the book Communication, Language, and Grammar: a Course for Teachers.
Criteria:
  • Full-time graduate student in the College of Liberal Arts
  • Good academic standing with a minimum 3.66 GPA in related courses
  • Enrolled in at least second semester of TESOL, Communication Development, Comp/Rhetoric, or English Education
  • Concentration or six credits of language courses: Phonology/Morphology; Syntax for ESL/EFL; Semantics, Pragmatics and Discourse; Teach English as a Foreign/Second Language; Theories of Foreign/Second Language Learning; Research in Teaching English as a Foreign/Second language
  • Applicant must submit one essay of approximately 500 words addressing their interest in the English language
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a faculty member in one of the concentrations or courses listed above
  • Preference given to applicants with first generation status
