Bio
MAITE CORREA is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and Basic and Intermediate Language Director in the Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department at Colorado State University. She has a BA in English Linguistics and Literature (2000) from University of Deusto and an MA in Hispanic Linguistics (2003) and a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (2008) from the University of Arizona. She has taught Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Spanish language courses for foreign and heritage language learners at the University of Arizona. She has worked at Colorado State University since 2008, where she teaches courses on Formal and Applied Hispanic Linguistics, Methods and Assessment in the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Research Methods and History of the Spanish Language, among others. She has published on syntactic theory, critical pedagogy, metalinguistic awareness, heritage language learning, and academic integrity. Other research interests include psycholinguistics, instructional technology, forensic linguistics and educational linguistics.

LSPA326 – Fonética y Fonología
El curso examina los diferentes aspectos fonéticos y fonológicos del español que nos introducirán a la lingüstica descriptiva y, al mismo tiempo, nos ayudarán a mejorar nuestra pronunciación y ortografía. Al final del semestre los estudiantes serán capaces de: 1) reconocer y articular los diferentes sonidos del español; 2) comparar y diferenciar los fonemas (y los alófonos) del inglés y el español.; 3) reconocer y utilizar el alfabeto fonético internacional (AFI o IPA); 4) hacer transcripciones fonéticas y fonológicas de palabras, oraciones y párrafos utilizando el alfabeto fonético internacional; 5) comprender el funcionamiento del aparato fonador y reconocer la clasificación de los sonidos del español según la sonoridad, el punto y el modo de articulación; 6) reconocer algunos rasgos sociolingüísticos y dialectales relacionados con la fonética y la fonología del español peninsular e hispanoamericano.

In this course students will…
• Gain an understanding of language teaching and learning principles that are essential for creating effecting learning contexts.
• Construct their own frameworks of knowledge, which can be used as guides for establishing effective learning environments.
• Develop a critical understanding of teaching approaches, the dimensions of language proficiency, the connections between language and culture, learning strategies, and the interrelationships between oral and written language development.
• Become familiar with the theories and techniques offered by various methods used in universities today, and be able to understand the theoretical and practical issues involved in the methodological choices available to the second language teacher.
• Acquire a critical, reflective attitude with respect to one’s own teaching.
