He is the author of 20 books, including Reality Hunger, War Is Beautiful, and Other People: Takes & Mistakes. The recipient of Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, Shields has published essays and stories in the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, Esquire and many more. His new collection of essays, Other People, will be published in Feb. 2017 by Knopf.
