The AIDS Quilt Songbook, conceived by HIV-positive baritone William Parker, was a musical response to the shame surrounding the outbreak of the disease and was one of the first art song publications to deal with the topic of HIV and AIDS. The work, was intended to be an ever-expanding collection of songs that could be performed around the country. The output of the artistic community became a catalyst for education and awareness in a time when HIV and AIDS ignorance and embarrassment consumed the nation.
