A CSU dance tradition since 1987, the Student Dance Concert is a unique and remarkable event within the dance program as the only concert directed, choreographed, and performed completely by CSU dance students. Coming together to work on all performance and production aspects provides students with practical experience in planning such an event. From lighting, costumes and design, publicity, and choreography, many different students have a role in making this concert a success.

“There are twenty dances this year, each choreographer has their own theme for what their piece is about,” said Jane Slusarski-Harris, director of dance at the CSU. “Students collaborate with designers and technicians to communicate their ideas.”

This event has the most student directors participating to date, with 11 seniors organizing and working on the concert this year. During the first week of the semester, students audition for a spot in the dances and rehearse every week up until the concert.

“We have a lot of different styles of dances in the concert this year including contemporary, jazz, ballet, and even Scottish highland dancing,” said Elyse Devos, one of the senior student directors. “Every dance has at least one hour of rehearsal a week and most dancers spend all day Sunday rehearsing in the studio.”

The student directors also make sure to put in a lot of extra time to make this show happen with tasks such as photo shoots, creating the show order, marketing, and organizing.

“Students learn and build off of past events and come up with great ideas; it’s always different and better each year,” said Slusarski-Harris.
