The School of Global Environmental Sustainability (SoGES) at Colorado State University has announced the selection of 20 early career academics — Ph.D. candidates and Postdoctoral Fellows — to be 2013-14 Global Sustainability Leadership Fellows. The SoGES Global Sustainability Leadership Fellows program cultivates future innovators and thought leaders capable of effectively communicating not only with peers but also with the public.

“We’re excited that the new Fellows represent seven of the eight colleges at CSU,” said Diana Wall, director of SoGES. “The Fellows’ disciplines range from ecology to political science, geosciences, economics, education, bioagricultural sciences, atmospheric sciences and biology. As always, competition for the Fellowships was stiff.”

The public is invited to meet the new Fellows on Monday, May 13, at 5 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Grey Rock Room during a lecture presented by Liz Neeley of Seattle. Neeley, the Assistant Director of Science Outreach at COMPASS, a science-based communications firm, will be speaking on, “Finding Your Voice: What Scientists Need to Know About Science Communication, and the Risks and Rewards of Speaking Up.”

Neeley also will facilitate the Fellows’ Science Communication Workshop, May 14-15. Journalists participating in the Fellows’ workshop include: Christopher Joyce, correspondent at National Public Radio; Hilary Rosner, freelance journalist; Katherine Gammon, freelance science writer; and Mark Fischetti, editor at Scientific American.

Communications skills training

SoGES recognizes that CSU’s academic researchers are a primary informational resource for the complex decisions that will determine our environmental future. Early career academics often overlook communications skills as they build their professional careers. The SoGES Global Sustainability Leadership Fellows have access to state-of-the-art environmental communications skills training giving them an edge for the future.

The SoGES Leadership Fellows will receive individualized media training and work to enhance writing and leadership skills. They also work on strategies for engaging with business, nonprofits, academia, government and media, as well as techniques for collaborating and transdisciplinary synthesis.

The College of Liberal Arts Development Office is hosting College to Career Alumni Panels for College of Liberal Arts departments. The College to Career Alumni Panels consist of alumni from the College of Liberal Arts who have created a successful and meaningful career with their Liberal Arts degree. While there are a range of careers that can be pursued by Liberal Arts graduates, for many graduates it can take a while to find a career that works well for them. Speaking from experience, the alumni panelists will give students advice, tips, direction, and best practices that students can use when networking and applying for jobs. For Spring 2013, the College of Liberal Arts hosted an Economics panel in March and will host panels in Sociology, Political Science, and History in April.

Congratulations to Susan Opp for receiving this year’s College of Liberal Arts Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Opp joined the Political Science Department in 2009 and quickly became a favorite of students. Susan’s undergraduate courses have included Public Administration, The Policy Process and Urban Politics. At the graduate level she has taught doctoral level seminars in Scope and Methods in Political Science and Public Policy Analysis. Susan has guided student internships, and graduate level special studies. This year she became faculty adviser to Pi Sigma Alpha, the Political Science Honorary Society.

Susan’s students offer the best insight into her teaching. One said of her, “Best Political Science teacher I have had in all four years.” Another said “I cannot say enough about this teacher. She has made political science fun, interesting, and useful. She goes above and beyond. She really is the best prof I have had.” Finally, one student wrote, “Words cannot express how grateful I am to you. You helped me find my ‘place’ here at CSU when I came back after taking a year off. I didn’t even know what public administration really was until you (w/smile). Thank you for being such an amazing role model for me. I only hope to be as successful as you already are.”

Dr. Opp is the latest member of the Department to win recognition for her teaching. Brad Macdonald and Courtenay Daum have also received the Excellence in Teaching Award, and emeritus professor Bob Lawrence received the Lory Award for excellence in teaching. Martin Adamian, Dawn King, and John Hultgren all received the CLA Excellence in Teaching Award for graduate teaching assistants while at CSU.

The award will be presented at the College’s spring faculty/staff meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, March 27th, from 4 to 5:30 at the University Center for the Arts.

Several political science majors spent the spring and summer semesters digging through state-level lobbyist registration records.

Several political science majors spent the spring and summer semesters digging through state-level lobbyist registration records. They were trying to identify Religious Right and LGBT interest groups that lobby state legislatures around the country. Seniors Steven Day, Rachel Lynn, and Shadi Barzideh, and Junior Brad Billica built a database of these groups registered during 2006-2010 for Dr. Kim Conger. Dr. Conger is studying the impact of the mobilization of opposing interest groups on state politics. The students did the work for independent study credit and learned quite a bit about the nuts and bolts of the political science research process. Each remains involved in the next stage of the data collection and will help train more undergraduate coders who will be joining the project this fall to collect interest group data for 2001-2005. The research is set to be presented at an academic conference next year.

"When I did get the honor of meeting the President, he was so kind and encouraging, which is what I will remember most from the day. Hearing the President thank me was the most rewarding and positive experience I could imagine.”

Last week sophomore political science major Haley Damm-Hamblin had an honor few of us will ever experience: introducing the President of the United States to a crowd of 13,000 people. President Obama’s visit to CSU and Fort Collins was the first by a sitting president. Haley explains the process leading up to her introduction: “I got a call one evening from a woman at the national campaign, who told me that since the visit had been announced, they wanted to talk to a few people in the field here to see what issues mattered to us and to possibly highlight them. I explained that I was a part of the campaign because I believe that the voice of young Americans should be heard and I think it is so important for young people to become involved in the elections and politics that affect our daily lives. A few days later she called me back and said how she thought my story was unique and that it would be valuable for other people to hear. She then asked if I would like to introduce the President, and at that point I was in total shock. Trying to remain calm leading up to the event was very difficult, I was nervous knowing that I would be speaking in front of so many people and excited knowing I would get to be in the presence of a world leader, especially one that I respect and support so much. On the day of the event, everyone I encountered, from Governor Hickenlooper to multiple Secret Service agents was so supportive and they all had so much confidence in my abilities, which was so encouraging as I was beginning to get very nervous. When I did get the honor of meeting the President, he was so kind and encouraging, which is what I will remember most from the day. Hearing the President thank me was the most rewarding and positive experience I could imagine.”

Professor John Straayer recently received the College of Liberal Arts JOhn N. Stern Distinguished Professor Award.

Dr. John Straayer recently received the College of Liberal Arts’ John N. Stern Distinguished Professor Award. The Stern Award is the college’s highest honor, and recognizes exemplary contributions of faculty in teaching, mentoring, advising, scholarship/creativity and professional and community service. That same day Professor Straayer was also honored by the Colorado General Assembly (see the story at http://blogs.denverpost.com/thespot/2012/04/19/house-republicans-honor-longtime-csu-professor-john-straayer/68349/).

John Straayer is now completing his 44th year as a CSU professor the Department of Political Science. He arrived on campus in 1967, having finished his doctoral degree at the University of Arizona in Tucson, specializing in the field of state and local government. From the beginning, John Straayer was and continues to be deeply committed to the idea of the university as a foundation of public well-being. He exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-teacher-civic servant, and is deeply committed to the ideals of academic freedom and shared governance as a foundation of a university’s excellence and the advancement of civil society in America. John’s passionate belief in these virtues undergirds his long and dedicated involvement in college and university governance and contributions to the Fort Collins community.

Throughout his career, John has always put students first. Many years ago, early in his career, Straayer partnered with colleague and political science professor Susan Furniss to establish the department’s internship program at the Colorado General Assembly. After a few years, with Susan’s retirement, it fell to Straayer to run the program. This he has done since 1980 at an outstanding level, building it into the premier internship program at the General Assembly today. John’s efforts in this area are commendable and would be commendable if only considered for the substantial blocks of time required. In order to insure a high quality experience, he has faithfully accompanied his students to Denver twice a week, all day, during the spring semester. But John has done more. He actively monitors each intern’s contact with their assigned legislator and makes sure students are not treated as mere gophers. To insure a quality academic experience, each intern is enrolled in Straayer’s POLS 304, Legislative Politics, during the semester, with ample opportunity to critically discuss their experience at the state legislature and incorporate their learning in research papers and other assignments. The internship program is highly praised by students and by legislators across the partisan aisle and is a high profile advertisement for the university during every legislative session.

In sum, few professors so well exemplify the various pathways of excellence that distinguish the very best, the scholars that are not only exemplars of rigorous research and scholarship in their chosen fields but are also leaders and mentors to the many other professionals with whom they serve and even more importantly, to their students.

Theresa Jedd and Matt Luizza were selected as Graduate Fellows by the Center for Collaborative Conservation (CCC) at Colorado State University and the Warner College of Natural Resources. The core of the CCC Fellows Program is to strengthen engagement among students, faculty, conservation practitioners and other stakeholders by promoting collaborative research, education and action on critical issues concerning conservation and livelihoods on landscapes around the globe. Each fellow is asked to take their work to the next level of impact so that their research or practice has greater influence on conservation and livelihoods on the ground. CCC fellows contribute to the Collaborative Conservation Learning Network where principles and practice of collaborative conservation are developed, exchanged, tested and adopted.

Theresa Jedd is PhD student in the Political Science Department working with advisor Michele Betsill. Theresa will meet with conservation practitioners from some of the 100+ groups and agencies involved in trans-boundary, international conservation for the 18 million acre Crown of the Continent ecosystem, one of the world’s most intact forested landscapes covering portions of Montana, British Columbia and Alberta. She will participate in the Crown Roundtable’s annual conference, gleaning insight from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, tribal groups, and private individuals with the ultimate aim of understanding of how collaborative forest conservation can function at the international level and strengthening this large-scale experiment in networked governance. Findings from this qualitative, interview-based fieldwork will be disseminated in a dissertation chapter, and a portion of her fellowship will sponsor the 3rd annual Crown Roundtable conference, creating a valuable linkage with the CCC.
